WAYS TO GIVE
Gifts of Stock or Securities
Donating stock or securities offers a number of benefits:
- A federal income charitable contribution tax deduction based on the stock’s fair market value on the date of the gift (up to 30% of your adjusted gross income) if the stock was owned for more than one year;
- Carryover of the deduction for up to five additional years if the fair market value of the gift is more than 30% of your adjusted gross income; and
- Avoidance of capital gains tax that is due when you sell appreciated stock.
Note: Stock owned for one year or less is considered a short-term asset and usually won’t produce attractive tax benefits.
Also, if stock has decreased in value, selling it and making a cash gift to the Somos Amigos is probably more beneficial. You can take a capital loss on federal taxes and still enjoy a charitable deduction up to 50% of your adjusted gross income.

Planned giving is a powerful tool. When supporters decide how their money will be used after they’re gone, it’s a final statement about their philosophies and beliefs. In the end, it’s about the legacy they choose to leave behind.
Additionally, there are immediate benefits of some planned giving options. Through a planned gift, donors may:
- Increase their current income or that of a designated beneficiary;
- Reduce income tax liability;
- Avoid capital gains tax; and/or
- Pass assets on to family and pay less tax.
Types of planned gifts include:

Pledge a Birthday
Each of us celebrates our birthday every year, but most of us feel that we don’t need more “stuff” in our lives. We know that many of our family members and friends want to honor us on our special day, just as we love to celebrate our relationships by giving to people we love.
But did you know that birthday gifts pledged on Facebook have raised more than $300 Billion dollars for non-profits? For your next birthday, instead of receiving traditional gifts, why not help us bring quality healthcare to our patients in the Dominican Republic. You will be amazed at how your friends will want to honor you by making a tax-deductible donation.
Facebook makes it easy to set up your birthday fundraiser. Follow this link, and you will step-by-step how simple it is. Thank you for thinking of Somos Amigos on your special day, and Happy Birthday!

Gifts in Kind
Gifts in kind, also referred to as in-kind donations, are a kind of charitable giving in which, instead of giving money to buy needed goods and services, the goods and services themselves are given. Gifts in kind are distinguished from gifts of cash or stock. Examples of gifts in kind that benefit Somos Amigos are pharmaceuticals, medical and dental supplies and equipment, professional services, etc. Please contact us if you are able to help Somos Amigos in this way.
